It is considered an autodialling alarm system which is illegal in many communities. I suspect they dont tell you that on the packaging.

My understanding is an alarm activation transmits directly to a proprietary alarm monitoring service (subscription), who in turn relays the alarm to the local authorities. The detector doesn't dial the local police desk or fire dispatch by itself.
