Out and About - Myrtle Beach SC, Nags Head NC and Deleware

13 posts in this topic

As many of you may know from some of my previous posts, my wife and i love to travel. Last July we traveled throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Link to my Pacific Northwest photos - http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php/topic/42938-out-and-about-pacific-northwest/page__p__244865__hl__%2Bpacific+%2Bnorthwest__fromsearch__1#entry244865

Then, in August, we were both fortunate enough to have some time off. With no real plans or reservations, we jumped in the car and headed South.

I have been meaning to post these pictures for months, but kept forgetting about them.

Enjoy!

First stop; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We had never been to Myrtle, so figured we'd check it out. We spent about 2 days here and had a great time. I took these shots as we were leaving to head North. I apologize for the poor quality, i thnk i left the camera in the heat too long. Anyone know how to improve the quality by chance?

Next stop; Outer Banks, North Carolina.

Ive been vacationing to the Outer Banks since 2005 or so. My wife and i got married on the Outer Banks of NC in 2009 and have been back at least once a year since.

On this particular trip, i believe we only spent 1 or 2 days here as Hurricane Irene was chasing us North.

We were "lucky" enough to be woken by the fire alarm 1 morning. As we evacuated, i took the oportunity to get some "action" shots. I heard there was a smoke condition on one of the floors of our Hotel, but never heard the outcome.

The FFs did however stretch to the Hotels FDC.

Most of the FD's on the Outer Banks have some form of Career staffing. We were staying in Nags Head and they are a combo dept like most, but i am unsure of their staffing levels.

Link to the Outer Banks Professional Firefighters website w/links to each of the stations.

Upon leaving the Outer Banks, we headed north to Ocean City, MD. Again, we only spent a short time here. They have a huge FD in Ocean City with numerous stations. However, when i tried to stop at some on our way out, they were either out on runs or otherwise empty.

From Ocean City, we continued north to Deleware to spend the day. Our final destination was Rehoboth Beach, DE to check out the Dogfish Head brewpub, amongst other things.

On our way from MD to DE, we came accross the Bethany Beach Vol. Fire department. It was a huge firehouse and the doors were open...a perfect photo opportunity.

Even though the Firehouse and apparatus are labeled "volunteer," they do have career staffing. I met with one of the Career members who was doing his rig check of their Engine. When he was done, he gave me a tour of the Firehouse and a synopsis of their activity.

They are not an overly busy Fire department. But being a beach destination, their population skyrockets in the summer months. With that boom comes mostly medical aided cases, mva's and water rescues.

Heres a link to their website:

I am vacationing in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina ( approximately 10 miles south of Myrtle Beach) and a different engine is outside of this firehouse is Garden City daily. I could not find what engine number this is, but it seems in good shape for the age it is. I believe it is still in service, although engine and ladders were responding right past it from the other bay doors every so often.

This is the only photo I have of it, but I plan on photographing other stations apparatus throughout the week.

Cool shots. Murrells a nice spot but it's south of Myrtle.

This is the engine's station, Station 2. The station has an engine, ladder, ambulance, and a beach patrol ATV and boat.

your pictures blurred because the camera fogged. when you shoot down south in the humidity you need to take the camera out of the air conditioning well in advance of going out shooting. the same thing happened to me twice, once in Ocean City, once in James City, VA. I went right from the hotel to outside in the heat/humidity, and everything fogged up.

Bethany Beach is about to take delivery of a replacement Tower and second Quint. Go to www.bethanybeachfire.com for details. Too many problems associated with the SkyArm feature on the previous Towers.

We plan on going there next month some time- I'll see if I can get some photos of it, and be glad to share it here. I also will be photographing other things down in Murrells Inlet.

Thanks for the info!
