Very inspiring. Good luck to them. Greenwich FD is a great department that serves a great town.

The GFD is also expecting to hire one more firefighter to make the total FF staff 97. In case anyone is wondering, Greenwich, CT is a large town on the Southern tip of Fairfield County, CT, just near the New York State border. It is protected by a combination paid/volunteer fire department. Greenwich has approximately 61,171 people living in 47.8 square miles of land.

The town's fire protection comes from 2 all-paid Fire Stations(Headquarters and Back Country Fire Stations), 4 combination paid/volunteer Fire Stations(Byram, Glenville, Cos Cob, and Sound Beach/Old Greenwich Fire Stations), 1 all-volunteer Fire Station(Round Hill Fire Department), and 1 all-volunteer Fire Department that protects both Greenwich and Banksville, NY(Banksville FD).

The paid Greenwich Fire Department staffs 6 Engines(4 of which share quarters with the volunteers), 1 Truck, a Rescue, a Special Operations Unit, and has an on-duty Deputy Chief every tour. The volunteer Fire Departments(Byram, Glenville, Cos Cob, Sound Beach/Old Greenwich, and Round Hill) operate a combined total of 6 Engines, 2 Trucks, 1 Rescue, 1 Dive Unit, 1 Trench Rescue Unit, 2 Fireboats, and 3 Squads(Small Rescue Units), and 4 Utility Units. The volunteer units also act as reserve units utilized by the paid department when GFD units go OOS. The paid GFD rescue is cross-staffed and only responds to certain specialized incidents, as all 6 paid Engines are equipped with Hurst tools for MVA's. The Banksville FD operates, I belive, 2 Engines, a Tanker, a Rescue, and a Utility Unit. In addition, there is the Cos Cob Fire Police Patrol, an independent agency which operates a Patrol Unit(Rescue) and a Utility Unit.

For some time(not sure if they still are), the Greenwich Fire Department suffered from staffing problems. Two of the paid Engines and the paid Truck were fully-staffed with crews of four, while the 4 remaining paid Engines were staffed with crews of only two. Thus, is an Engine with only two guys got to the scene of a fire, they would have to wait for the 2nd due Engine or the Truck, or volunteer units to arrive before they could really do anything. Hopefully, with these newly-hired members and if the problem hasn't been resolved already, staffing with be pack up to par with more than two guys on each rig. The GFD also plans to place a 7th Engine into service in the Northern sections of town for better coverage.

Nice Summary. However, I think HQ is a combo. The Volunteer Hose and Chemical Co. No. 2 and Amogerone Fire Co. No. 1 are the 2 volunteer companies at HQ. Squad One, the GFD Cascade unit, is kept at HQ and is volunteer run. Does GFD run EMS calls? I know banksville does in NY. GFD also responds to HPN for any aircraft emergencies.

Here is how the staffing is run (From Local 1042)...

Station 1: Greenwich

15 Havemeyer Place

3 Firefighters & 1 Lieutenant on Engine 1

3 Firefighters on Tower Ladder 1

1 Deputy Chief

Station 2: Cos Cob

200 Post Road

1 Firefighter & 1 Lieutenant on Engine 2

Station 3: Byram

Delavan Avenue

1 Firefigher & 1 Lieutenant on Engine/Rescue 3

Station 4: Glenville

266 Glenville Road

1 Firefighter & 1 Lieutenant on Engine 4

Station 5: Sound Beach

207 Sound Beach Avenue

1 Firefighter & 1 Lieutenant on Engine/Rescue 5

Station 8: Back Country

669 North Street

3 Firefighters & 1 Lieutenant on Engine 8

Again wrong Firedude Greenwich FD does not run on any aircraft emergencey , just the higher ones. levels 1,2,are handled by home depts.

Relax. B) I remember hearing GFD Car 5 sign on to Fire 19 when they responded to the airport. But I guess that was a higher level. Anyways, thanks for the correction.

They have a website... http://www.amogerone.com/Amogerone/Home.html and they are getting a new truck. So I assume they're still in operation.

How does Banksville fit in with all this?

Banksville covers Banksville, NY(which in in Westchester), as well as some of the Northern sections of Greenwich, as they are located near the CT/NY border. Banksville units are numbered for both the town of Greenwich, and with Westchester County numbers. For example, Engine 158 is Engine 71 in the town of Greenwich, CT.

Before any other updates just wanted to say I have known Jeff since ... a long time, like middle school. Great guy, took his FFI and FFII with my brother Brian at Fairfield Regional.

Just a few updates that I noticed: Central is still combo, Amogerone does run Squad-1 (fresh air truck) and it has been between Central and Byram fire stations over the last few years. Vol. Hose and Chem. is also still active, but they don't have there own truck, most of the time they ride out with Cos Cob rigs. Greenwich Fire Police is the inactive company. Most of their calls are split between Cos Cob Fire Police Patrol and Glenville Fire Police. They had a truck, Patrol-1, but it was sold when their last members went inactive.

As for Cos Cob: I noticed Marine 2, probably referencing the Fire Company's Boat, but we also have a boat but for use in much smaller bodies of water. Having said that, I am looking for the pictures of the Patrol's boat out at Island beach! The new Tanker should be in service soon too. Perhaps HubEng21 has those details.

Attached is the new Tanker 2 that (215, now 214) mentioned in the last post. It will go hand in hand with Squad 2 (also pictured) and added to the Tanker Task force. Some of you who listen in on the Greenwich FD radio feed may have heard it be dispatched for a couple alarms/fires in the past week but it is still out of service at Greenwich Fleet being put together; it was in the CAD "in service" by accident. It should be placed into service by the end of this week.

As far as I know, there is no Rescue 3 that the Vollies have, only the utility.

Rescue 5 is combination. Most of the time ran by the Vollies.

Some DC's respond to the airport emergencies on their own without being dispatched but Greenwich is like the 8th alarm (exaggerating) to the Airport. I believe Round Hill's Tanker 6 is on level 3 alert for Airport but id have to double check.

And to get back on topic... Congrats to the 2 new paid FF of Gwich! Hopefully they aren't giving you a hard time Jeff haha. :D

Hub, I caught another update: Round Hill Patrol-6 (1964 Dodge Powerwagon?) ... went out of service when the new Squad-6 joined the fleet. I think the old Engine 62 (Engine 63) is still around as well.

I think the Rescue 3 refered to above is the Prime Mover for the Decon trailer, hazmat, etc.

Cool. A quick question about HQ. About twelve years ago, I saw the old ALF Ladder 10(I think it was an ex. Sound Beach Ladder) in the garage bay on the far left(under the Amogerone sign). I believe it ran as the town's spare ladder for a while. However, seeing as how it was at HQ, were Amogerone or Volunteer Hose and Chem. using it as their rig? Also, I'm not sure, but I think Engine 31 from Byram is at HQ now and is the town's spare. Are either volunteer companies, particulary Volunteer Hose and Chem. using that rig to ride out on call with?

Also, on firenews.org, there's a bunch of photos of rigs in front of HQ from the past, namely Engine 1, Engine 8, Engine 12, Ladder 1, and Ladder 10. Were they all paid rigs back in the day, or did the volunteers use them. Also, was HQ considered "Greenwich Fire Department", as each other station had their own rigs(http://www.firenews.org/ct/CosCoboldphoto.jpg)(http://www.firenews.org/ct/SoundBeacholdphoto.jpg).

Good luck to Cos Cob with their new tanker! They did have a small one back in the '70's(http://www.firenews.org/ct/CosCoboldtaner.jpg).

And again, good luck to the two new Firefighters.

Yes that Ladder was a Sound Beach Ladder. It use to be a CONVERTIBLE!! Heard some stories from the old timers about riding around in that with no top. When Greenwich purchased the twin mid-mounts, Ladder 10 was used as a spare, thing was great. It was stationed at Cos Cob whenever it was not being used as a spare and the Cos Cob Vol. Fire Company were trained on it and used it for calls, mostly storm standby's. I do not believe Hose and Chem used it, and Amogerone did not. Peddle to the floor to get that thing out the door. It was going to be sold to Banksville when their ladder was no longer operable but it was not and was sold or donated somewhere else.

The rigs in firenews.org that you mentioned are paid rigs as far as I know. It has always been a combo department though. Maybe a older member can touch on this and Greenwich's past. Maybe this should be moved to a new thread??

My dad's uncle used to be a volly back in the '60's-'70's at Sound Beach. Next time I see him, I'll ask him if he ever rode in the ALF open cab. I know i t was at Cos Cob for a time though. I remember seeing it there shortly before it got taken out of service. Is Engine 21 still at Cos Cob, or just the Pierce Velocity(Engine 2)?

I can start a new thread if you want on Greenwich FD history.

Wow, lots of questions to be researched. Going back about 20 years into history, there have been several designations for the various pieces housed at Central. Engines 1,8 (formerly 22 in Cos Cob),11,12, and now 31 come to mind. Ladders 1 and 10 (Seagrave that moved to Cos Cob while ALF was inservice as Ladder 5 in Sound Beach) as well as Platform 1 and Tower 1. Hazmat 1, Squad 1, Patrol 1, and various staff and fire marshal vehicles along with Car 5, now Car 3 for the shift LT now Deputy Chief. So now in addition to completely confusing everyone, I have managed to steer this thread way off course. Back on target: the guys have either started the academy or will do so soon! Best of luck and we will see you in a few months on the floor!
