Amarillo Firefighter Dies from Injuries after Falling from Fire Truck

04/25/2005 AMARILLO -- An Amarillo firefighter died Monday just before 10 a.m. He died from injuries he received when he fell from a moving fire truck Saturday night while en route to a fire. Twenty-four year old Brian Hunton fell near 3rd and Van Buren.

Hunton had a severe head injury. He had been a firefighter for two years.  

Flags at Amarillo fire houses have been lowered to half staff in Hunton`s memory. And members of the Amarillo Fire Department will wear black mourning ribbons on their badges until further notice, according to the fire department.  

The fire department, police department, and fire marshal are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Family Members Remember Fallen Lubbock Born Firefighter

 

One of the largest funeral services will take place in Lubbock on Thursday, April 28th, in honor of Lubbock native Brian Hunton. The 27-year-old died Monday from head injuries he received after falling from a moving fire truck over the weekend in Amarillo, where Hunton served for two years. He served in Lubbock for two months.  

Brian's father says his son had his heart set on being a firefighter for years. One of Brian's best friends was a Lubbock firefighter, and the nature of helping others was a perfect match for Brian.

Brian's father, Paul Hunton said, "One of the comforting things for me is if there's anything I ever did right in my life, it was raising my son. I'm so proud of what he accomplished."  

Brian's father says his son showed a lifelong compassion for helping others as an firefighter. Brian was a hero in the eyes of dozens of those who paid their respects to him Wednesday, April 27 at his visitation. However, in his own eyes he was a man just doing his job.  

 

A funeral procession for a fallen firefighter will begin in Amarillo and end in Lubbock. The procession is in honor of Amarillo Firefighter Brian Hunton.  

Paul said, "In my heart, yes, I'd call him a hero. But, me and my son have talked about this and he would not consider himself a hero. Many people would."  

Amarillo Fire Department, Lieutenant Steve Barrera became aquatinted with Brian during their times at the station. Barrera says Brian took hunting and fishing trips with other firefighters, and he had an excellent sense of humor.  

However, most of all, he remembers Brian's passion. "He was dedicated to the job, most definitely. He's been wanting to do this for quite some time. He always did the best possible job he could."  

Paul too will remember his son as a man who wore the badge with pride. "I know in my heart that when he jumped on that fire truck the other night, there was a smile on his face," said Paul. "Because he was going to do something he loved."
