White Plains union says "City should hire more firefighters"

15 posts in this topic

Even if it did cost a little more than the $1.9M, you would think the City would not look a gift horse in the mouth. If they're hiring 9 entry level positions, that's about $105,000 per firefighter per year to cover salary and benefits. I would think that would be more than sufficient for entry level. Even if it isn't, the City should realize that it will also be saving some OT costs with more firefighters and that savings could be calculated fairly easily. Beyond that, there is at least the potential to save money due to less injury time as many hands make lighter work.

I hope the City reconsiders. Giving back free and needed money is never a good decision.

The article says one rig was taken out of service? Which company was shut?

"With the reduced manpower, Clampet says that the White Plains Fire Bureau recently started using only eight fire apparatuses instead of nine."

"Callahan says that the City never has less than eight pieces on the road, and that having eight or nine varies from season to season."

Maybe Rescue 88. That could have been the "seasonal" company. I'm not sure, but I think it's a cross-staffed rig like NRFD's Rescue 4? I could be wrong though.

Th company placed OOS is Ladder 34 out of station 7 in the south end of the city. Rescue is manned 24/7/365, it was browned out after the layoffs in May of 2010, for a short time due to manpower issues.

White Plains Firefighters Union Says City Should Hire

White Plains Professional Firefighters Local 274 is questioning why the City gave back a portion of a grant to hire back nine firefighters, instead

of seven.

By Dina Sciortino of the White Plains Patch

White Plains Professional Firefighters Local 274 says White Plains could be at risk with the City's failure to hire new firefighters. The firefighters union is questioning why the City gave back a portion of a $1.9 million grant that would have allowed the City to hire back nine firefighters that were originally laid off in May 2009, instead of only seven.

"Those two extra firefighters are crucial, because we're so short on man power," said Lt. Kevin Clampet, the secretary treasurer for Local 274. "It's a safety issue. In order for us to have an efficiently and effectively run department, we need people. For that two-year grant period, it would have made White Plains a safer city at no cost to the taxpayers."

And yes we are a FIRE DEPARTMENT. Even at 169 it's not enough, the dynamics of the city has changed and the manpower has decreased.

That's the trend of the Job Brother let's do more with less. Always loved that mentality of having do take on more things like EMS for the so called "Productiviy" argument. Then we turn around and they lay guys off and put rigs out of service. That makes sense!

Maybe it is because of selfish brothers who won't take brothers from another job who are getting laid off in order to keep their OT? That makes sense!

The population is about 60,000 BUT during the the day it jumps to about 250,000 and now that WP is a 24 hour city with BOOMING night life that 60,000 really isn't 60,000 anymore. WP is 10 sq miles. WPFD has 9 companies- 5 engines, 3 trucks, and a rescue. The only time WPFD runs ems is if all the bus' are tied up, occasionally they respond on an assist.
