United States Marine Corps turns 236

The Marines' Hymn

From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli,

We fight our country's battles in the air, on land and sea.

First to fight for right and freedom, and to keep our honor clean;

We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine.

Our Flag's unfurled to every breeze from dawn to setting sun.

We have fought in every clime and place, where we could take a gun.

In the snow of far off northern lands and in sunny tropic scenes, You will find us always on the job, the United States Marines.

Here's health to you and to our Corps, which we are proud to serve.

In many a strife we've fought for life and never lost our nerve.

If the Army and the Navy ever look on heaven's scenes,

they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines.

Anyone who's earned the title...knows this and still gets a flutter in their chest. To all that have gotten their a** kicked in PI or San Diego...and served their time in "the big suck"...oohrah!

The United States Marine Corps adopted the motto Semper Fidelis in 1883, on the initiative of Colonel Charles McCawley (January 29, 1827 – October 13, 1891), the 8th Commandant of the Marine Corps.[15]

There were three mottos prior to Semper Fidelis including "Fortitudine" (meaning "with courage") antedating the War of 1812, "Per Mare, Per Terram" ("by sea, by land"; presumably inherited from the British Royal Marines, whose motto it already was), and, up until 1843, there was also the motto "To the Shores of Tripoli". "Semper fidelis" signifies the dedication and loyalty that individual Marines have for "Corps and Country", even after leaving service. Marines frequently shorten the motto to "Semper Fi."

Interestingly while researching "Semper Fi" I happened upon this little tid-bit:

"Semper Fidelis" is the motto of the city of White Plains, in New York, United States.

Thank you to all who have served The United States of America, as Marines. Some of you might have seen the story yesterday; out in Las Vegas the entertainer Marc Anthony was out on the town when he came across two Marines dressed in their Class A uniforms. Mr. Anthony proceeded to take the two Marines with him, from place to place and introduced them as his guests of honor. Classy move, as in my opinion all members of our military are deserving at all times of being "guests of honor" no matter who they are with or where they might go.
