Police Department Shuts Down, Mayor Tells Citizens To Buy Guns

It's been resolved recently, but still another interesting financial story:

The loss of the Alto Police Department gained national media coverage. In July, shortly after the layoff of the department, waves of crime sprees were prevalent in Alto and the surrounding areas. Reports of seven burglaries in less than 24 hours were the first notable evidence of the lack of police coverage

suffered even worse of a fate this year as budget woes have left entire cities without law enforcement. In June, the Alto, Texas city council voted to abolish the entire force for six months to save money, to which Mayor Monty Collins cautioned townspeople to bolt their doors and "buy a gun."
