Devil's Night In Detroit

I've been told Devil's Night a.k.a. Mischief Night is in full effect for the Detroit Fire Dept. who've been responding continiously to structure fires all night.

I've heard conflicting reports of between 10 and 20 fires tonight, most of which are arson related.

Volunteers smother number of Angels' Night fires in Detroit

The number of fires set in the city of Detroit during Angels' Night and the days preceding Halloween is down significantly from last year, according to the mayor's office.

Dan Lijana, spokesman for Mayor Dave Bing, said in a statement this morning that numbers for Sunday and the weekend are "well below" last year. City officials are expected to release the specific number of fires sometime early this afternoon, he added.

There were only 18 blazes on Saturday — lower than a typical Saturday, which, on average, sees 26 fires, according to the city.

In 2010, there were 169 fires over a three-day period around Halloween — up from 119 in 2009.

The city mobilized citizen and volunteer patrols throughout the city, part of an ongoing effort to combat fires in the days preceding Halloween.
