YPD cars, late 70's early 80's?

10 posts in this topic

Hey guys,

Looking for some shots of Yonkers Police cars, from around 1976-1983. I remember they were pretty simple; white sides, dark blue roofs, trunks, and hoods, with double reflective stickers on the trunks that said "YONKERS" and "POLICE." Small blue on white shield on each door. The cars were Diplomats (or were they Furys?), LTD's, LTD-II's (my favorites), Volares, and Ambassadors.

I have a diorama modeling project in mind, and although none of these are available in the scale that I need, I can improvise.

Thanks!

If I remember back then, the YPD cars were Blue and White. But how about some YPD cars from the 1960's when they were Orange and Blue?

I hate to admit that I remember the orange and blue cars very well, with their big gumball beacons. I lived on Knowles Street at the time. I believe they were Plymouth Valiants.

They were Diplomats, I will look through my stuff, I know I have at least one good pic of one of them.

Not exactly. In 1960, you'd have to have waited two more years for me to even drive a Matchbox limo across the rug in the living room.

Nice to see you back bad box!

Edit: Any Yonkers guys want to help us out here, and identify the location where the photo was taken?

I was too young (about 4 or 5) when President Kennedy came through Yonkers on his campaign drive (I'd bet you would NEVER see open cars like that again). I do remember President Nixon traveling through Bronxville when he was campaigning for President in 1968.

I think that is facing east from Larkin Plaza looking up into manor House Square? - I beleive those apartment buildings in the background are on the dead end of overlook terrace. The building on the left I think was a bar (Ryan's?) just west of Philipsburg Hall - The motorcade is entering the north side of larkin Plaza heading west toward the train station.

Here's a few. Credit to the original photographer.

It looks like the YPD changed from black/white to blue/white somewhere around 1985.

I know I'm bumping up an old thread but I'm doing it to hopefully spark some more photos of vintage YPD cars. I'm looking for photos of '90s YPD Caprice's
