Stamford Fire Rescue New D/C Car

Brand new duty Deputy Chief vehicle placed in service on Tuesday October 18, 2011. This vehicle responds with the Shift Commander (DC) and DC Aide out of Stamford Fire Rescue Headquarters on Main Street. The vehicle is a 2011 Chevrolet Suburban which came through Northwest Hills dealership in Torington, CT and was purchased under the CT State contract. The vehicle features a ton of brand new equipment inside and out as well as a ton of customized components. I have photos from the entire build and plan on posting them very soon. I will also be posting a full list of the equipment that we have in the vehicle as well. This is just a few pictures so everyone can check it out. I should have a post with the specs and all the features in the next day or two.

I love the LED's on the running boards, and especially on/in the overhead tailgate. Nice warning without being blinding. Also the fact that is says "Command".

Question: Does Stamford always choose that color for the D/C's?

This is our second Chevy Suburban in that color red. Apparently that is the only red available in the Suburban 2500. Chevy offers a different red but from what we understand it is only available on the Silverado pick-up model. Were not to picky when it comes to the shade of red but I did suggest that if we ever order another one, we could get a closer red to our apparatus by simply ordering the vehicle in white and then painting the lower half the appropriate shade of red. That would give us a two tone matching paint scheme. That's a few years away though so we will have to wait and see.

Two-tone would be pretty cool. Much like Stratford, CT's Command Car. I remember when they had the Excursion a few years back, someone at 1 Company was saying how the reds didn't match, and they were looking into getting a new(now former) Command Car for the Deputy that matched the color of the rigs. It is pretty close now though. By the way, what will become of the Ford Excursion reserve Unit 4?

All in all, it's an awesome car. Looking forward to seeing it pull of of HQ Code 3 in the near future. With all the lights it's sure to draw some attention.

Weird. Must be the 2011 model year. I thought "Victory Red" was still available. I know of several departments that have take delivery of AKA "fire engine red" Suburbans and Tahoes, mostly 2011 and prevvious. Someone had mentioned that the red was the longest running color for the suburban, and that there is batch of reds they make a year for FD's.

The large control panel is Motorola's new integrated control head. That is our main fire radio, light and siren controller. The head below it controls the Future Com radio repeater. The radio is very nice in that it integrates three devices into one panel and it saves console space. The radio itself is dual band so all of our mutual aid frequencies are programmed into that head for interoperability. Very expensive system. We are one of the first departments in the state with this set-up. Had a lot of programming issues with it and the siren still does not work as it should. Motorola is working on a fix for us and hopefully it will all come together soon.

Where's the "Civil Defense" Sticker (and who get's that?) jk, really sophisticated, pro installation!

Edit: Please indulge me for a moment of explanation. Not so long ago, the analog, tube-type radio systems that many Westchester departments communicated on 46.26 had a head-unit (where the microphone attached) which was stamped with the classic Civil Defense logo. It was an....adaptation from Cold War preparedness to fire department emergency communications.
