Great Burlington, VT Area EMS Apparatus

42 posts in this topic

Here are a few photos I took recently of some of the EMS apparatus/ ambulances in the Greater Burlington, Vermont Area.

I took these shots with my Droid so they are not of the highest quality.

The first photo is of Charlotte Volunteer Fire & Rescue A-1. 2007 Ford E350/PL Custom

The second is of Vergennes Area Rescue Squad (VARS) A-2. Ford E350

The final is one UVM (University of Vermont) Rescue A-2 (R-2). 2009 Ford E450/Osage

Yes they were. As will the vast majority of any photos I add to this thread for two reasons. 1. FAHC is 3 blocks away from my apartment 2. Every patient but one I have ever transported up here has been transported to FAHC.

Look for more additions to this thread as time progresses. Only recently have I realized how many rigs I have had a chance to shoot but haven't. I might also add some fire apparatus as well if I can get some photos.

I'll add a few shots too these are some of shots of the rescue squad I run with in my dads town up in Vermont. These are from the Brandon Area Rescue Squad in Brandon VT they're paid per call and run about 700 calls a year.

Just curious, is the UVM Ambulance a student run EMS Squad? Or it's a sponsored ambulance paint scheme by UVM?

UVM Rescue is 100% Student Run - Check out their website, here.

Also, nearby Saint Michael’s Fire Rescue is 99% Student run.

He is correct that UVM and St. Mikes are both student run EMS organizations. However UVM is closer to 90% student run and St. Mikes closer to 75%.

I still believe UVM is entirely student run, it has been since it inception and was when I was a member. St. Mikes has a paid college staff member that oversees the operation. UVM is student run with advisers from the university. I could be wrong as time has passed. St. Mike also runs a student staff FD that handles campus calls and mutual aid in the area of VT. St. Mikes built a beautiful new station and has added some nice apparatus over the years. All great organizations, great places to practice EMS and live. Thoroughly missed on my end!

I thought I would add some photos from the area as well. St. Mike previously handled NICU transports for hospitals in the area. I thought I had a picture of their Medium duty NICU truck but can't find. I included an older UVM truck, 2007 PL Custom, at the FAHC helipad with North Country Life Flight. Others are Burlington, VT 2009 Osage and E1 E One. Sorry, SMRS is not the best quality.

I think you are right. UVM Rescue is Student led but has advisors from different departments around campus. St Mikes is mostly student run. The Chief is a alumni and has been with the deparmtent since the begining.

Also, why does North Country Life Flight use a NYSP helicopter? Are they run by the NYSP?

Additional info/photos on these agencies can be found at firenews.org

By the way, thanks to everyone for sharing their pictures!

If I remember correctly, and things may have changed, but the medical members of NCLF were volunteers and the pilot was a NYS Trooper. The primary mission of the helo was law enforcement and it was tasked for EMS when needed. I remember they would return to quarters and be called out on a LE mission. The medical side was a flight nurse and EMT or EMT-P. Also great crews to work with. Upload happy tonight, I included the Eurocopter BO 105 that they used to use and what they are currently flying.

North County LifeFlight is the medical provider for the NYSP Saranac Lake base. Each NYSP base contracts out with an ALS provider to provide the paramedics and equipment.

Newburgh - MLSS

Albany - Town of Colonie EMS

Saranac Lake - North County LifeFlight

Syracuse - North Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Batavia - MercyFlight WNY

SMRS is a part of Colchester Center Volunteer Fire Department (CCVFD), their command staff, at least on the fire side is a much more entrenched, hierarchical command staff and officers. As for their rescue department, their Paramedics are paid (on-call,when needed) as is some of their staffing is former members and etc. As for UVM, while they cover the majority of their operations with students, there are reasons regarding staffing of crew chiefs and drivers why other members of outside organizations have had to run with them in the past. All that said, it is amazing what these kids are able to handle. UVM handles an extremely large number of calls as year as does SMRS.

I truly do enjoy practicing EMS in this corner of Vermont. Standards are extremely high and so is this level of professionalism and dedication of all members both paid and volunteer. Practicing is most definitely different than practicing back in New York.

DWC295, the NICU truck was sold to Vermont State Childrens Hospital to be used as their NICU transport rig. It is operated by FACT if I remember correctly. I will see if I can get a picture, it is frequently at FAHC.

St. Mikes fire department and UVM Rescue are both extremely busy student run or involved organizations, and both agencies do a large amount of mutual aid per year. St. Mikes, aside from being a part of Colchester Center, is the primary EMS provider for their campus, as well as most of the town of Winooski. St. Mikes just recently completed their new "public safety" facility; I took this picture this past spring....

Interesting Rescue for UVM, do they have their own fire department?

No, UVM doesn't have their own FD. The City of Burlington covers the campus. I heard that the UVM Physical Plant bought the old Ford. I didn't realize it became a confined space rescue. Anyone have any more info?
