Daytime Volunteers

4 posts in this topic

First I'm not against volunteer but I think I'm just trying to be a realist. In the times we live in both husband and wife are working, traveling farther to and from work. The amount of free time is limited so if they are off together they want to spend time together. Now if they have kids do they have any free time? So both are working durring the day nobody is around for the daytime, if they have kids and one works days and one works nights, then they have no time, can't take the kids with you. I don't think people don't want to I believe that most people are just to busy. With that said I think you have to look out for the people you cover, the town I live in (CT) was covering 87% of there 1st calls (Unsure about 2nd calls)

They have 2 ambulance's in the fire Department, the local paper says they do 1300 calls a year (800-900 Ems). They contracted with a paid service for a paramedic flycar 24/7 and one emt from 6am-6pm Monday - Friday. If a volunteer go to the scene and it's BLS they take it with the paid EMT and the medic goes back into service. They now cover 100% first calls and 95% 2nd calls. This is not right for every town. I think that if you can get your ambulance out (some corps always due now matter what time) god bless, I don't think any thing is wrong about asking for help during the day.

Just ranting

NYTruckie,

Eastchester is the same way. 24/7 medic, one paid EMT 7a to 7p on the weekdays. We cover 99.5% of the first calls, every once in awhile on the weekend mornings we have trouble, and Id say about 95% at least of the second calls.

I think that with the changing times, hiring at least 1 EMT for the daytime would be benificial to everyone.

Tarrytown has at least one paid EMT on day shifts. Some days there is one paid and at least one volunteer, others there are two paid EMTs and no volunteers.

I dont know what percentage of calls they make, but i'm pretty sure they make all first calls and most second calls. if they cant make the second call, m/a is called.

Daytime ems....With everyone working two jobs just to make ends meet, why doesnt all VAc's jump on the wagon and hire at least an EMT to cover calls. We have plenty of people that wanna drive, but it doesnt seem like people wanna take an EMT class. We need EMT's not drivers 90% of the time. One way to handle this would be to hire an EMT. Then the calls will be covered in a timely manner.
