Westchester EMS Awards-Congrats!

Sally has been with Greenburgh PD*EMS for a long time, is an excellent paramedic, and is well deserving of this award.

Benjamin has been working his butt off for the past few years to bring quality, convient, and new educational oppurtunities to the Greenburgh and Westchester areas.

Congrats to both!

It is with pride and adulation that the Greenburgh Police Department announces Greenburgh Police Civilian Paramedic Sally Peterson has been awarded the distinction of “Paramedic of the Year” by the Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee (REMAC) and Police Paramedic Benjamin Fontanilles the “EMS Educator of Excellence Award.” These awards will be presented to them at the 38th Westchester Regional EMS Council Awards Ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 20, 2011 at the Double Tree Hotel, Tarrytown, New York.

Ms. Peterson has provided paramedic services for the Town of Greenburgh since 1989.

Benjamin Fontanilles was first employed as a Civilian Paramedic with the Town in 2003 and became a police officer in 2006. Both are valued members of the department and we congratulate them on receiving these prodigious awards.

REMAC is responsible for developing, reviewing and or implementing dispatch, treatment, triage and transportation protocols specific to the needs of its regions. There are 18 EMS regions within New York State. Westchester County is its own region and therefore has its own REMAC. The REMAC consists of a group of five or more physicians and one or more non-voting representatives of hospitals, basic life support providers and advance life support providers.

The REMAC is given independent authority to decide EMS medical issues within its

region and must work collegially with the Westchester County Regional Emergency

Medical Services Council which is made up of elected volunteers. Some of the

responsibilities of the Westchester County Regional EMS council include

coordinating emergency medical services programs within the county, implement

training, approve REMAC nominees and make determination of the public need for

additional emergency medical service agencies.

The REMAC and Regional EMS Council give the authority to each EMS agency in

Westchester County to operate and set standards and procedures that EMS agencies must

follow as outlined by the New York State Department of Health.
