A firefighter from Windsor has passed away tonight, not to many details just that the firefighter had collapsed. updates to follow.

WINDSOR, Conn. -- A Windsor Volunteer

firefighter died after collapsing at the scene of an emergency call Monday night. Officials are not identifying the firefighter at this time, pending notification of the family.The chief said the firefighter was at a call on Poquonock Street at the Windsor Rehabilitation Center when the incident occurred.

Because the firefighter was on an emergency call, it is considered a line of duty death, even if the death is not caused by an event at the call.

Additional details are expected at a later time.

WINDSOR—Volunteer firefighters are mourning the death of a colleague who died Monday night after collapsing at an emergency scene on Poquonock Avenue.

Fire Chief William Lewis and Deputy Chief Jim Shea confirmed the firefighter's death about 10 p.m.

Windsor firefighters responded to a call at Windsor Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center at 581 Poquonock Ave. about 8 p.m. for a report of a smell of smoke. The firefighter was rushed to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center after being stricken.

Windsor Mayor Don Trinks said the loss of a volunteer firefighter is a loss for the while community.

"Community-wise, this is just devastating," Trinks said. "It underscores the danger and risk they face, as volunteers."

Fire officials released few details Monday night, pending notification of the firefighter's family.

"The town owes not just him, but all our firefighters a debt of gratitude for what they do," Trinks said. "It's just devastating. To think we lost one tonight is hard to accept. I hope the other members of the fire company are doing alright. Certainly we'll do what we can for them."
