More firefighters die of heart problems than in fighting fires

...deaths from heart attacks and heart conditions continue to dominate the fatality statistics, not just among Connecticut firefighters but in fire departments across the nation.

Last year, 54 of the 87 firefighter deaths recorded by the U.S. Fire Administration were heart-related. Of the 54, 50 were firefighters older than 40 years of age, and 32 were volunteers.

Of the 17 deaths among Connecticut firefighters since 2000, 12 were volunteers. Thirteen of the 17 were older than 45 years of age....
