Southington firefighter hurt in accident at training school

(Wolcott-AP, Apr. 3, 2005 5:00 PM) _ A Southington firefighter has been critically injured in an accident during a training exercise.

The firefighter, identified as Justin Wisneiwski, fell off a ladder at the regional state fire training school in Wolcott today, the Sunday Republican is reporting.

He was in critical condition at Saint Mary's Hospital late Saturday night, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Details of his injuries were not available.

Middlebury Fire Chief Paul Perrotti is president of the association that oversees the school. He says Wisneiwski fell off a 24-foot extension ladder from a height of about 20 feet.

He was in an entry-level class of firefighters. Classes will be suspended tomorrow.

The Southington Fire Department did not release Wisneiwski's age or length of service.

Perrotti says more firefighters are injured in training than fighting fires.

The school had a fatal incident in March of last year, when 38-year-old Prospect firefighter Robert Griffin died of a heart attack while crawling through a maze.

Unfortunately, he did not make it, our thoughts go to his family and friends as well as to his brother and sister firefighters of the Southington FD.
