Remembering The Fifth Anniversary Of FDNY "Black Sunday" 1-23-05

2 posts in this topic

Let us not forget today is the fifth annivesary of "Black Sunday" in NYC, one of many tragedies in FDNY history and one of the saddest in modern times.

6 firefighters fighting a fire at a tenament on E 178th St in the Bronx had to bail out the fourth story window of a illegally subdivided apartment when flames trapped them. Maydays are transmitted, and audio of the fire is found with a Google search, but there wasn't any time and nothing anyone on the scene could have done fast enough. This brought national attention for the need for "bailout" equipment and training, as well as better code enforcement for these types of buildings.

Lt. Curtis Meyran and Firefighter John Bellew both gave their lives that day.

Firefighters Brendan Cawley, Eugene Stolowski, Jeffrey Cool and Joseph DiBernardo all survived, but with severe injuries.

Later that same day, at another fire, Firefighter Richard Sclafani from Ladder 103 was killed after being knocked unconscious, without his mask, as his brothers searched for him in a smoky basement fire in the East New York section of Brooklyn.

God bless, thoughts and prayers on the anniversary of this terrible incident. Hopefully, lessons learned were applied and have already saved firefighters lives.

Excellent article about the fire:
