THREE FORKS, Mont. -- Montana Highway Patrol investigators have identified the trooper shot and killed Wednesday afternoon during a routine traffic stop in Three Forks as 23-year-old David J. Delaittre.

Trooper Delaittre was killed while executing a traffic stop off Highway 2 near Three Forks around 4:30 p.m. It happened on Frontage Road west of the town.

The Montana Highway Patrol closed Hwy. 2 between Three Forks and MT 287 as hundreds of police officers converged on the scene to search for the gunman.

My God, only 23 years old, with his whole life ahead of him. What a sickening thing to happen. May he rest in peace, and his family find comfort in the fact that he died protecting the people of Montana. He's with God now.
