It is with deep regret that we announce the line of duty death of Lt. Bruce Bachinsky of Engine 8 "C" shift. Bruce passed away today of a massive heart attack a few hours after his shift ended.

My condolences to the family and friends of Lt. Bachinsky.

While his passing is sad and a loss to his department, it should be as much a warning to us as the "Everyone Goes Home" mantra. Heart health should be just as paramount in the FD and EMS service as every safety check and extra piece of gear we wear. I'm 47 and I was hospitalized for a few days for a rapid heart rate. The doctor's diagnosis: STRESS and OBESITY. Let it be a "head's up" to all of us. And of course, may God rest his immortal soul.
