For those who don't know the term, a call-firefighter is a part-time firefighter who responds from home or staffs the station and gets paid for their services when they are called upon. They are not volunteers nor are they full-time / permanent firefighters. This is a common practice in many MA fire departments.

Five call firefighters were arrested Thursday night on charges that they set fire to two vacant buildings in Brimfield and another in Holland and then responded to the blazes, getting paid for their work, according to authorities.

No one was hurt in the three fires in June and July in Central Massachusetts near the Connecticut border. But the alleged actions of the five men drew denunciations from their chiefs, Hampden District Attorney William M. Bennett, and State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan.
