Fairfax - Westchester Comparison on Tax Levy

Interesting article - quite telling that the property tax levy is ONE THIRD that of Westchester. Maybe we should stop the "we've always done it this way nonsense" and start some real reform.

Our recent stories on municipal consolidation reminded me of places I have lived and how they receive government services. For much of my tax-paying life, I have lived in Westchester County or Fairfax County, Va. The two places have a lot of similarities. Both are great places to live with good schools and a good quality of life. Both are suburban counties next to major cities and are similar sizes in population, land mass and number of public school school students, with the density of population being a little greater in Fairfax.

Here, the buyer of a $1 million house for sale in Armonk will have a property-tax bill of $30,077 a year. There, the buyer of a $1 million house in McLean will have a property-tax bill of $6,979.

Lower taxes and better services, Why would we want that here?

I read this article when it was out, sure would be a refreshing change for us. Then in yesterday Journal News I see the new Supt. of schools( Somers )starts early at salary of 225,000 with a 3 year contract. must be nice...waiting for his house to sell in Colarado and his family will move here wonder if Somers gets to foot the bill for all that too.

Virgina is also a right-to-work (right-to-starve) state. As such people make much less then their unionized counterparts in most jobs. Those shops in Virgina who happen to be union represented are packed with freeloaders (non-members) who don't have to join the union, but get the benefits of it even though you paid dues and they didn't.

Yes, the costs are cheaper then living in Westchester, but at what cost?
