White Plains Fires 7/7 w/FDNY Discussion

42 posts in this topic

I'm back to work in the morning, I will have the rundown to WP for the Purple K. If it was 59 Engine, they are the back up to 84 for the Purple K Rig. E-228 and 229 in Brooklyn have one as well, along with E-33, 326, and 163.

Saw the plume on my way home from work, found out the address, and dumped the car on a sidestreet to take a couple of pics from my phone. Great job by everyone who responded. Very heavy fire and smoke condition. I saw units from Eastchester, Scarsdale, and Mamaroneck operating or relocated. Anyone count the alarms? I heard about 5.

I still smell like burning Indian food...

According to the FDNY Bronx Supervisor, they sent E59, E228, Purple-K 84, Purple-K 228, Battalion 15 & a Staff Chief.

I believe E65 was making the initial push, because in the earlier stages they were giving the size-ups which included the floor had been compromised.

A tough job combined with unfavorable weather conditions, but the guys working this fire deserve a ton of credit. I am glad that the guys realized they had heavy fire in the basement/cellar and that the main floor was compromised - we've all seen and heard of fires like this where brothers fall thru the floor.

Well done guys.

Did Yonkers send any units to White Plains? Seems like their department would be the best suited if ANY in Westchester to respond to a mutual aid callout.

Closure of Station 8 (scheduled to close on July 9th @ 0800)

Posted On: Jul 07, 2010 (10:51:23)

The City of Yonkers is planning to close the "Second Fire House" in the past week, along with the 36 firefighters who have already been laid off, and 34 who were demoted, further jeopordizing the safety of the Citizens of Yonkers, as well as the Firefighters...............

Are they really best suited?????????

For the E Post Road job:

The original request for Mutual Aid was for 2 Engines & 1 Truck to cover White Plains.

(Greenville E151, Fairview E174 & Hartsdale L46 assigned).

Iniitial 1 & 1 requested to the scene: E151 & L46 sent. (Backfilled with New Rochelle E25 & Scarsdale L28).

Addiitional Engine to scene: E174 sent. (Backfilled with Eastchester E31)

Additional 1 & 1 to scene: E25 & L28 sent. (Backfilled with North White Plains E75 & Harrison TL24)

Additional Engine to scene: E31 sent. (Backfilled with Elmsford E237)

Cascade to scene: Greenburgh Civil Defense U446

Due to the awful weather, rehab was a concern all day. Here's the rundown of EMS units (to the best of my memory).

White Plains (Transcare): 31A1, 31A2, Supervisor

Harrison: 61-1, 61A1, 61A4

Port Chester/Rye/Rye Brook: 77A4, 77A5

Armonk: 51B2

Elmsford: 58B1

Greenburgh PD: 59A3, MCI Trailer (DES)

Valhalla: 82B1, Rehab Tent

Grasslands (Transcare): 87A1 (Originally at the Substation fire)

WCDOT sent two "Bee Line" buses to the scene also for rehab.

Covering other calls in White Plains: Scarsdale 79A1, Port Chester 77A4 (then to fire scene)

Covering Elmsford EMS: Hastings 62B1

DES Resources on scene: Car 1, Car 2, Battalion 19, EMS 11, OEM (Tents, etc.), Field Com, MCI Trailer (GPD)

DES Resources at Substation fire: Car 2, OEM, Battalion 15

While these fires were happening, we (60 Control) also had the Haz-Mat incident ongoing in Croton, the structure fire in Mohegan and the large brush fire in Hawthorne. EMS units in Westchester were busy yesterday, providing rehab and transport to firefighters at all of these incidents. There weren't many FDs and EMS agencies we didn't utilize yesterday, thanks to all of you!

60 Control handled 164 calls yesterday on the day tour ( 0700hrs-1900hrs )and 6 out of those 164 calls were large scale incidents that required a lot of mutual aid and resources.

The FDNY is sending two engines, a purple K unit, and possibly a battlion and division mutual aid to the working fire in White Plains. Unsure of Which FDNY units at this time.

Yesterday Westchester County requested three FDNY Engine's with their Purple K units. E-59, E-84 ,E-228 ,And BC-15. They all met up at FDNY Engine 66 & Ladder 61 in Co-op City and then proceed up to White Plains to the Sub staion fire.

There's a few different places they can meet up. One is 63, the others are 38 and 81. Interesting choice of 66, though. The actual rule is they are supposed to wait for an escort. Possible the escort was from New Ro, and met them at 95 and the city line. Just a thought as I'm still on vacation.

Didn't Yonkers have a fire at a ConED substation not more than a month ago? Why did they not call the FDNY then if large amounts of Purple K is not available in Westchester?

The Yonkers fire was above ground outdoors and they were able to use foam. I don't know where the White Plains fire was but I "heard" that it was either below ground or in a vault. Perhaps someone can expand on this with some real info...

Crew of E-69 sounded like they were right in it.

I'm a White Plains boy and E69 must be a reserve engine called to duty. Engine 69 was a company assigned to Station Five on Robertson Avenue (Battle Hill section) and closed many years ago. I lived in that area and signed the petition!

Have known many WP FFs and they are a great department. Great job guys, too bad you were faced with an almost impossible task.
