Nancy Bergquist, Rockland's first female paramedic, remembered as 'gold standard'

SLOATSBURG — Nancy Bergquist, a Sloatsburg resident raised in Pearl River, died Thursday of liver cancer at Northern Westchester Hospital. She was 50.

Bergquist was born in New York City but became a product of Rockland's Catholic schools, including St. Margaret's School, after her family moved to Pearl River in 1960. She attended Rockland Community College, earning an associate degree in occupational therapy, and later would earn a degree in paramedicine, enabling her to begin what her brother Michael Bergquist described as "her calling."

Nancy was the EMT every paramedic want to work with. When she became a paramedic many other paramedics wanted to be like her. She had a great sense of compassion for her patients and a great knowledge base as a paramedic. Nancy learned from some of the best and became one of the best. She was one of the original North Rockland Medic 1 Paramedics.

Never a dull moment when you worked with Nancy. She will be missed
