Putnam Fire Calls Break All-time Record

by Eric Gross

The number is astonishing!

In 2009, Putnam’s 12 fire departments and four independent volunteer ambulance corps responded to 8,383 emergency calls—the most ever in the county’s history.

Commissioner of Emergency Services Robert McMahon reported the numbers last week, telling the PCN&R: “A quick tabulation reveals that our dedicated, all-volunteer corps of firefighters, first responders, and EMTs handled just under 23 alarms each day, which is truly amazing.”

One call per hour countywide - not much of a volume and some agencies still have difficulty staffing their units and covering calls.
