Pump Operator Cheat Sheet - Feel Free To Use This

1 post in this topic

When I took my pump ops class a last year, I came up with this Cheat Sheet. Thanks to Chief Kelly of NRFD for being a great instructor. Please use this and share it with everyone. If you're a somewhat "normal" person like me, theres no way to remember all of those formulas.

Acronyms

FL=Friction Loss

C=Friction Loss Coefficient (See Below)

Q=Flow rate divided by 100

L=Length of hose

PDP=Pump Discharge Pressure  (Also known as EP=Engine Pressure)

TPL=Total Pressure Loss

E=Elevation (+.5 PSI per 1' rise, -.5PSI per 1' drop)

AL=Appliance Loss

Friction Loss Coefficient (By hose diameter)

1 1/2" = 27

1 3/4" = 12

2" = 6

2 1/2" = 2

3" = 1

4" = 0.18

5" = 0.060

FL=C*Q(squared)*L

PDP=FL + NP +/- E - AL

IDEAL FLOW RATES

1 1/2": 100-125 GPM - Small rubbish fire, small vehicle fire

1 3/4": 150-175 GPM - Fully involved car fire, single room fire

2"      : 200-225 GPM - Residential Structure Fire

2 1/2": 250-325 GPM - Commercial/Industrial structure fire

IMPORTANT - DO NOT PUMP MORE THAN 200 PSI ON HANDHELD FOG NOZZLE UNLESS REQUESTED BY OFFICER. SWITCH TO SMOOTHBORE NOZZLE TO LOWER PDP.

NOZZLE OPERATING PRESSURES (AT THE TIP):

HANDHELD FOG (COMBINATION) NOZZLE - 100 PSI

HANDHELD SMOOTHBORE - 50 PSI

MASTER STREAM FOG NOZZLE - 100 PSI

MASTER STREAM SMOOTHBORE NOZZLE - 80 PSI

***WHEN USING 1 3/4" OR 2" ATTACK LINES, EFFORT SHOUOLD BE MADE NOT TO EXCEED 300' IN LENGTH. DO NOT EXCEED 500' LENGTH OF 2 1/2" ATTACK LINE. uSE A LARGER HOSE (5" LDH) WITH A GATED WYE OR SIAMESE CONNECTOR.
