MVA Training Not Involving Extrication

6 posts in this topic

How often do you train on what to do when going to a simple wreck? example: going over certain simple things. Block trafic with the aparatus, apparatus placement, chocking the vhichle; even though it may not be a pin job. disconecting the battery etc. probably not alot

We train our drivers to always park the rig at an angle that provides a safe working area for all invloved. We will disconnect the battery at all MVA's - some we cut, others just disconnect. We also have drilled it into everyone's head to stabilize every car at every accident.

I have to do one of these drills in the near future. So much emphasis is put on extrication that the miriad of other functions fall by the wayside.

I think it's because the pin jobs are so few and far between that departments train for them. They may feel that the little accidents are so routine that the time taken practicing simple stuff is a waste of time, when they could be playing with the big toys. Just an opinion, of course.

Vehicle placement at scenes is covered at the OSHA 8 hr each year. All members must attend.

We did a drill during this past fall, removing victims from a truck. we used our 2500 gal tanker and did our basic size-up, chock the wheels and removed the victim(assist ems). You get alot out of such a simple drill. We always train for the worst and overlook the simply things. Good Topic.
