WEST HAVEN — A fire early Sunday severely damaged an apartment building at 10 Highland St., forcing 70 to 80 residents to seek emergency housing, according to a Fire Department official.

The blaze began in the basement and spread to the upper floors of the three-story brick building, according to Lt. Jim McNulty of the West Haven Center District fire company.

“There were people hanging out the windows,” McNulty said. “Some of them we took out through the windows, and some we brought down the interior stairwells.”

There were no injuries to the residents or firefighters, he added.

McNulty said the fire was reported at about 3:15 a.m., and once units arrived at the scene it took about 15 minutes to put the fire out.
