New York City firefighter improving

Eugene Stolowski, the New York City firefighter and Village of Florida resident who leapt from a fourth-floor window to escape a deadly Bronx fire last month, is improving, according to family members.

Although listed in critical but stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, Stolowski is "alert" and improving, family members said.

"Recent surgery on his legs, ankle and foot went well," family members said in a hand-written statement released at a news conference at the Village of Florida firehouse yesterday.

The 33-year-old Stolowski has been an active volunteer for the local department for three years, according Florida fire Chief Michael Coleman.

The Jan. 23 Bronx fire was sparked by an overloaded extension cord in a third-floor apartment on East 178th Street and quickly spread to the fourth floor where Stolowski and five other firefighters were searching for residents.

As the fourth floor became engulfed in flames, the six firefighters were forced to leap from the building to escape. Two firefighters were killed in the jump.

Stolowski, a New York firefighter for seven years, moved to Florida from New Jersey six years ago with his wife, Brigid. They have a 2-year-old daughter, Brianna, and are expecting twins.
