GOSHEN - Residents of two southern Orange County fire districts will head to the polls Tuesday to vote on spending plans that opponents claim are too costly in our economic times.

“I love our volunteer firefighters, but some people in our town, especially the seniors, are having a tough time,” said Newell Miller, a Goshen resident opposed to his fire district’s request for $2 million to renovate a firehouse. “Though it doesn’t seem like a lot of money, they (fire commissioners) didn’t even consider the cost when they put it on the agenda.”

The Goshen Fire District currently has $750,000 to help pay for the $2.8 million project, which includes adding a 4,000-foot expansion to the Minisink Hook & Ladder fire station on North Church Street. The addition will include offices, a laundry room, a weight room, new kitchen and an elevator for handicap accessibility....
