You are both off-track, Wooster Street is good for long lines, tourists, and attitudes.

The BEST pizza in New Haven is on State Street at MODERN Pizza!

Extra well-done pepperoni with Foxon Park Birch, there is nothing better........

I grew up a few miles away from Foxon Park Soda. That is a great tradition. And yes, modern definitely is a good locals joint. How I miss New Haven.......

Speaking of Yonkers, My favorite pizza joint (before moving away) was Capri Pizza, on Lockwood Ave.

I've got to throw in a vote here for BAR on Crown St. Bacon and mashed potato pizza with a great microbrew made on premises; what else do you need in the world?!

Why would anybody from NY eat a Pizza from CT?????? Bad enough they call a Wedge a Grinder, and STEAM thier hamburgers.

Those of you who live or work in NY have alot of good pizza joints to choose from. In CT. it is harder to find GOOD pizza. Don't be too excited about Pepe coming to Yonkers. And by the way if you're in CT take I-95 Exit 24 in Fairfield and go to the Pepe's there; it's about 20 miles closer to NY then New Haven.

Pepe's is good, but very overpriced, you are essentially paying for the name. I would put a Colony Grill (Stamford) pizza up against a Pepe's any day. The ovens at Pepe's are pretty neat though. Coal-fired ovens give the pizza crust a unique consistency. Don't get me wrong, I would go to ANY Pepe's ANY day. As a matter of fact, I'm getting hungry.

You guys can keep your cardboard New England pizza, I dont care what some History Channel documentary tells me is the "Worlds Best". Bronx pizza will always rule.

Some of us are transplanted NY'ers and have to deal with what we've got; at least the New Haven pizza is 100x better than what passed for pizza when I lived in the Rochester area. You had to dip that cardboard stuff in blue cheese to make it edible!!!

One of these days I'll bring the kids back to NY and get them some slices from Portofino Pizza in Goldens Bridge; I remember you could feed a family of 4 with two of those slices!!

I've always felt that the "best" pizza is hard to judge. For pepperoni, it could be one place over another. Same thing for a sicilian slice. It's gotta have a crisp, thin crust, not too much sauce that it gives you a mouthful of tomato taste, and the cheese makes a big difference. I'd keep elaborating, but now I need a slice!

I gotta throw my two cents in here. NY pizza definitely out does New Haven pizza of which Pepe's and Sally's as well as Roseland's in Derby are quite good. But for a GREAT pie there is no better than the Colony in Stamford. Sausage and stingers please.

And for those who don't know Colony pies are made by, of all things....Irishmen. My goomba ancestors are rolling in their graves that I should tout Irish pizza, but hey when a joint is good there's no substitute.

Cogs

ps Just thank God we live in the NorthEast where even a bad pie is at least still a pizza ...pizza anywhere else is pizza in name only

I can't agree with you more. I get very frusterated trying to explain to Texans they're not eating pizza. That is probaly one of the very few things I miss about New York.

Heard good things about BAR and will need to try. Eli's in Hamden has a fantastic bacon and mashed potato pizza as well......

Modern has the Best chicken pizza.

Bar by far is the best Mashed and Bacon.

Eli's............Just like it's parent bar across the street, only the beer is good in my opinion.

Roseland hasn't had a good pizza there in a while, at least on the takeout side. You have to eat there.

Oh and why should someone from NY got to New Haven to eat pizza......simple because it was born here just like the hamburger!!!! :P

And for those who didn't know, Frank Pepe was allergic to both tomatoes and cheese so he couldn't eat it. That is why he invented the white clam pizza, still the best anywhere by far.

I gotta agree with JCoppola Colony Grill in Stamford tops the list in Fairfield and Johnny's in Mount Vernon tops Westchester.

For those Pepe Pizza Fans, word is that Pepes is planning on expanding. The orginial was started in 1925 (yes, actually before I was born) on Wooster St in New Haven. For about 70 or 80 years, that was the only Pepes until the second one opened up in Fairfield, Ct to help eliminite the huge crowds that would gather outside waiting to get their favorite pie. Shortly after another one opened up in Manchaster, Ct at the Blue Hills Mall area. Most recently on July 1, 2009, the Fourth Pepes opened up at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Ct. When the Pepes opens in the Fall (2009) in Yonkers, N.Y., it will be the first one to open in NY State. I"ve heard that other Pepes will be opening up in Danbury, and Enfield, Ct and in NewRoc City, NY.

When the Pepes opens in Yonkers, I"ve invited "r1smokeater" and "jpinto" to join me in one, two, or three, of Pepes Famous Large Meat Specials with all the works. I hope they"ll take me up on it. But once we sit down, it doesn"t matter how many fire trucks go by, we DON"T LEAVE.

As a kid in the 1950s my parents would take me to Pepes. Funny thing, I didn"t like pizza in those days, but I sure do now. Guess thats why I was skinny then and I"m so fat now. But there was a Waiter then whose first name was Sal. He would wait on us then. As a teenager, I"d go there and Sal would wait on us. I brought my wife there on our first date in 1975, and Sal waited on us. As the many years went on, Sal always waited on us. Sadly Sal passed away at age 89. I think he started working there when he was 18 years old. I believe he was still waiting on customers and working until he died. They would be closed on Mondays and I guess that was the only time Sal was off. He was really a Great guy. They even named the street after him in his honor. He was known by generations who would go to Pepes. He was good to Eveybody. If you go there, I believe they have a few pictures of him on the wall. He was the Greatest.

Actually nfd2004, The Spot at Pepe's opened up back in the late 80's and is located to the left of the original pizzaria towards the back of the lot and this would constitute as the second Pepe's Pizzaria to handle the over flow and also to handle large parties as well.

Besides, at the end of the night when you are in New Haven, you have to stroll over to Libby's. The other places don't have that next to it!!! :)

Would this be a good time to debate who has the best steamed cheeseburger?

Yes, The Spot is located next to the orginial Pepes and I do believe it was put in there to handle the over flow. Same pie and some of the same employees. I guess I looked at that as an "addition" to Pepes, and not another Pepes.

My cousin and I would always order the same thing. Two large pictures of beer, two dozen raw clams on the half shell, (Yes, in those Great Days, they sold the Qua Hog"s), and that Large Special Pie with all the Goodies.

Libby"s is Great too. But in my younger years, after a Pepe Throwdown, came time to visit the many bars and hit on a few ladies.

Who"s got the Best Steamed Cheeseburgers, is somebody else"s call.

unfortunately you're all wrong about CT Pizza. The best Pie in CT is from Letizia's in Norwalk, CT.

I don't buy the New Haven or Colony Hype.

Unfortunately the best steamed cheeseburgers can't be bought in Connecticut; what does it take to get a White Castle open in this state?!?

No doubt, a White Castle Franchise in CT would strike gold. Not sure why it has not happened?

Izzy - Teds? nah, too much Travel Channel hype. Got to go with O'Rourkes in Middletown or Owens in Cheshire....
