Yonkers- Severe Storm Summary 07-07-09

Just before midnight, a storm moved through Southern Westchester that the National Weather Service deemed to not be a tornado but a downburst associated with a "supercell" thunderstorm that produced wind gusts of about 75 to 80 mph. Over a dozen homes were left uninhabitable with 17,000 residences without power- 8,500 in Yonkers. Heaviest damage followed a path from the JFK Marina E/NE to Warburton Ave from Ashburton Ave to Executive Blvd., continuing along Palmer Road, Bryn Mawr area into Crestwood and CenTuck and on to Tuckahoe Village and parts of Eastchester. First and Fourth Precinct area hardest hit.

2340hrs- A severe storm crossed from Bergen County into Southern Westchester and lasted approx. 30 minutes. PD and FD units reporting heavy hail and severe conditions.

2348hrs- 160 Warburton Ave- Scaffolding collapse reported, PD unit on scene reporting no injuries.

2350hrs- 19 Kingman Terrace- Report of a tree into a house with building collapse and victim pinned. ESU rpts North Braodway, Kingman Terrace and surrounding area impassable due to trees and wires down.

- Victim was in bed when a tree crashed into the house, pinning her in bed. Family members removed the vicim from under the tree and ESU treated, packaged and carried the victim with various injuries from the home up to North Broadway to meet Empress.

0000hrs- Reports of partially submerged vehicles with occupants trapped 1200 block Nepperhan Ave. Executive Blvd, Nepperhan Ave and surrounding areas, including Saw Mill Parkway reported to be impassible due to approx. 6-inches of hail.

0002hrs- ESU conducting searches of homes on Kingman Terr to Hudson Terr to Woodland Terr for injuries.

0005hrs- Reports of vehicles in flood water on Central Ave X Tuckahoe Road area.

--Hundreds of reports of downed trees and power lines, with 911 overloaded with calls.

0015hrs- Reports of occupied vehicles in flood water and mudslides on north end of Warburton Ave.

0030hrs- Reports of 13,000-volt power lines down on Tuckahoe Road with car fires.

0035hrs- ESU responding to 200 block of Woodworth Ave for reported pregnant female trapped under a structural collapse.

-PD holding over Officers from Early Tour.

0100hrs- Yonkers opening Emergency Operations Center at iPark. FD relocating Southwest side units to north Yonkers.

0120hrs- ESU searching a home on May St. with severe structural damage, attempting to locate occupants and req. Con Ed and Buildings Dept.

0140hrs- PD, ESU, FD responding to Corbalis Place for report of an elderly person trapped in a home with severe structural damage.

0300hrs- FD and PD recalling members.

0700hrs- YFD operating with E-300, 315, 316 and several FSU units.
