NYPD Rookie Makes Arrest Moments After Graduation

Jul 3, 2009 7:18 pm US/Eastern

NEW YORK (CBS)

A New York Police Department rookie just couldn't wait to get started.

One of the NYPD's newest officers made his first arrest Thursday just minutes after graduating from the Police Academy in a ceremony at Madison Square Garden.

Grant, 47, has 48 previous arrests and was just released last week from Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, N.Y., after serving time for a robbery conviction, police said.

I'm curious about how many of his 47 years were spent incarcerated especially given his recent release from State prison. Figure he didn't start his one-man crime wave until he was about 13 years old so he's managed to be arrested 1.5 times per year since then. That's probably far higher if you factor in the time he was in jail.

Can anyone say habitual offender status and life without parole???

Kudos to the rookie who made the grab - that has to be some kind of record! Graduation to Central Booking in 15 minutes!

Knowing the way the city works, this mutt has been locked up numerous times for minor things. The DA's office likes to knock things down to lower charges(trials cost money), and then the judge gives a Adjournment Comtemplating Dissmissal. I arrested one guy for theft of service, and recovered a 5 inch steak knife from the guy waist band, The ADA drawing up the case refused to bring felony Criminal Possesion of a Weapon charge, even though the perp had served 8 years for Murder 2, with you guessed it a knife. The ADA felt that a steak knife was not a dangerous weapon. You know, lots of homeless dine on steak often.
