Description Of Incident:

On Fri. 7/3/09 at 4:20pm, Lake Mohegan Fire responded to investigate a possible HAZMAT situation at 15 Lyncrest Rd in Cortlandt. 60 Control advised responding units that the homeowner found a small acid bottle inside of a residence while cleaning. Upon arrival of units, the homeowner told units that he found an old picric acid bottle inside the basement. Due to this type of incident, the Westchester County HAZMAT Team and Health Dept. were requested to the scene. Engine 258 secured a safe position near the residence, while Engine 255 stoodby a hydrant. 69B3 also responded to set up rehab. Fire-Police responded and shut off the street to civilians and civilian vehicles. Once the HAZMAT Coordinator arrived, it was deemed that there was a high potential for explosion. The residents next door were then immediately asked to evacuate and members staged even further from the incident. At the request of the HAZMAT Team, the Westchester County Police Bomb Squad was then requested to the scene to remove the bottle from the house. The bottle had the explosive power of up to 12 sticks of dynamite. Once the Bomb Squad arrived, the bottle was removed and taken by The Bomb Squad's containment truck to an undisclosed location for detonation. All members cleared the scene at 7:15pm.
