Rye searching for Police Commissioner, but old one may stay on

RYE - The city is looking for candidates for police commissioner, but that doesn't mean the current commissioner,

William Connors, is going anywhere.

Because Connors is a retired New York City police officer and receives a state pension,

every two years the state has to grant him permission to also work in Rye, City Manager Frank Culross said.

What's known as a 211 waiver requires the city to seek other applicants to show that Connors, hired in 2000,

is still the best candidate.

I personally work with Commissoner Conners from a fleet perspective and in my opinion, he does a great job and is very personable towards the maintenence staff. Like with any employment situation, there will always be personel who dont like their commanding officer.

Anyone working on a 211 waiver has to do this every two years and the waivers are becoming harder and harder to come by (at least at the State level). A whole bunch of NYS employees who were working on these waivers were just told that they will not be renewed and they are all losing their State jobs.

While this may be good from a budgetary standpoint, it will result in a tremendous "brain drain" in some organizations and some very talented people who did the lion's share of the work are being let go.

Tough times, now and ahead!

Its actually bad from a budget standpoint, you can hire an qualified person and not hyave to pay retirement, health an other benefits, since they are already paid for.
