Increase in Crime Against Photographers

3 posts in this topic

The NPPA and NYPPA are warning thier photographers of an increase in robberies and larcenies against working media.

"Photographers are becoming victims of crime in increasing numbers with thousands in equipment taken, or victims threatened with injury. Recently, a Post photographer was accosted while sitting in his auto at a stake out on Bedford Avenue and Lafayette Street by a teenager armed with a gun on Sunday afternoon. A Daily News photog was robbed of his cell phone and camera gear by a group of thugs. Two other Daily News photographers had thier vehicles broken into and gear stolen."

Doesn't suprise me. I'm sure photographers make easy targets. Just got to be smart and don't leave your gear visible, and if a confrontation does occur, give up your stuff- it ain't worth your life.

Also, I don't know the way it works in NY....but keep all your serial numbers on file.....here in Texas, Pawn Shops are required to report serial numbers, and it is entered into TCIC/NCIC so when it is found, it most likely will be returned to yoy. I've seen a lot of proprerty recovered this way.

On the subject of serial numbers, make sure all equipment is registered with the manufacturer and serial numbers of everything noted. This way, if your gear is stolen from your car or home you can claim the lose with your insurance company and get reimbursed.
