STAMFORD -- City lawmakers Monday postponed a decision on whether to approve the fire union's agreement to accept concessions in exchange for no layoffs for two years.

Like other city bargaining units, the firefighters union has been faced with renegotiating its contract since the Board of Finance earlier this year cut funding for city employees' salary increases. Ten unions had secured contracts with 3 percent raises before or shortly after the budget cut. The raises were to take effect July 1....

Maybe I am a bit misinformed, but I don't see how the article says that layoffs are possible. It seems that by doing what you guys did, you satisfied what the city wants. They obviously want to "eat their cake" too, I agree. We are ALL in the same boat! I am doing my part to "influence" one of the voters on the board of reps. He really doesn't like to listen to what I have to say though. I hope you guys (786) get through this unscathed. We are keeping a close eye on it up in Norwalk because we go to the "firing range" next spring, but we have taken steps to make sure our gun is bigger than theirs!

Stamford police, fire union concessions approved

STAMFORD -- City police and fire unions won approval of concession agreements Monday that will prevent layoffs for two years.

Shortly before 9 p.m., the Board of Representatives passed a last-minute deal struck between the city administration and police 28 to 3. A similar agreement for firefighters passed 27 to 3.

Both city unions would have faced 20 layoffs each if city lawmakers had not passed the contracts, city officials said. In the case of the fire union, the city would also have been forced to leave five open positions vacant.

Fire union president Brendan Keatley called the decision "a relief."...
