Feds: NY suspects 'eager to bring death to Jews'

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A federal prosecutor says the men accused of a New York bombing plot were disappointed that the World Trade Center wasn't around any more to attack.

Four men are accused of planting what they thought were explosives near two Bronx synagogues. They're also accused of plotting to shoot down a military plane in Newburgh, N.Y.

Three of them appeared in White Plains court on Thursday. Shackles prevented them from raising their hands while swearing to tell the truth.

"there are several basic reasons these cases are publicized. The obvious ones are that the alleged terrorists are breaking the law, and even if they are inept they might succeed in hurting people. Another is to heighten public awareness that a terrorist threat continues. In many cases the NYPD chooses not to prosecute, preferring to disrupt plots and recruit new sources of intelligence. And the public revelation of a case like this also has a useful psychological message: if you are three or four guys conspiring to carry out terrorist acts in the New York area, one of you is likely to be an informant."

I don't know why, but that last line about "one of you is likely to be an informant" gave me a good chuckle.

There is a great article in Time Magazine about this plot and why you dont f*** with New York City if your a terrorist.

They caught these guys because this cell, like most homegrown terror cells have no clue on how to actually make or obtain explosives, scout targets or plan an attack so they usually find some other person who can. Usually the person that they are trying to find is an informant...

Coincidental this time. Airports are required by the FAA to conduct full-scale exercises every three years so it just happened to coincide with the investigation/arrests. Besides, if the exercise was related it would have been a crash somewhere proximal to the airport but not on the airport given their planned attack.
