Why are the Reservoirs so low?

6 posts in this topic

So I pass the Each Branch of the Croton Reservoir system in Brewster on an almost daily basis on my commute from work. I can't help but notice that the water level is EXTREMELY low. Does anyone know why? Is it for maintenance on one of the dams or some other infrastructure? If it stays that low into June I'd imagine there would be some considerable drought concerns no?

They were drained so the pipe line could be worked on. the last report i heard was that the work was done and they were going to start re-filling them.

DEP also has the ability to control the levels in most of the reservoirs so they can raise or lower the level depending on the needs of the system. So you may see a reservoir that's extremely low by design. Simply amazing system!

Of course come August it'll be because NYC is using too much water and it hasn't been raining enough but that'll be another thread...

Thanks for the info. I was trying to figure that out as well. What is really surprising is how deep they are.
