Ambulance Driver Abducted And Raped In Violent Attack

- An ambulance driver was abducted in her own ambulance and raped. It

happened this morning at St. Catherine's Medical Center.

Eyewitness News Reporter Stacey Sager has the story from police headquarters

in Hauppauge, Long Island.

Police say this case is completely unusual. We're talking about a hospital

that's in a very quiet neighborhood, an ambulance driver who was just

dropping off a patient and a violent crime that took place shortly

afterward.

St. Catherine's Medical Center sits atop a quiet hill in Smithtown, Long

Island. It's a place for treating emergencies, not generating them. But

police tell us that somehow, some way a man got into an Ambulette vehicle

early this morning, possibly when a female driver stopped at the hospital to

drop off a dialysis patient.

Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky, Suffolk County Police: "We don't know how he got into

the ambulance or when he got into the ambulance but he was in the ambulance

when she was leaving the hospital."

Police say he made her drive, threatening her with a sharp object. And then

two miles away in another quiet neighborhood, he allegedly raped her. People

who live and work here were stunned as they watched police with search dogs

canvassing their streets and yards.

Jessica Roggio, Smithtown Worker: "I baby sit here every day. It's scary.

There's a lot of children especially in this neighborhood and you wonder

what you have to look out for."

Rich Restifo, Smithtown Resident: "Hopefully they can catch the person who

did this - the police can get on it and do something about it."

The driver eventually made her way back to the hospital where she called

police and got medical attention.

Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky, Suffolk County Police: "We've never had this type of

incident occur at St. Catherine's Hospital. We have nothing of this type of

activity occuring in the area."

This woman was able to give police a description of her attacker, saying he

was a white man in his 30s, five foot six inches tall with a thin build.

They say he had short, dark hair and a full-grown goatee. He was wearing

dark clothing with lighter shoes or sneakers. They're asking any one with

information on this case to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

This was a horrible incident, but I wanna clear up two things:

#1. It appears to me this was an Ambulette (Wheelchair Van). As per the photos, and if she was an "AD", where was her partner?

#2. EMT OR PARAMEDIC! NOT AMBULANCE DRIVER!!! JEESH, Can't these story typers get it right, lol!

Always lock the bus and make sure you have an extra set of eyes and ears, ie a partner. Secondly, as far as the perp; trauma shears, hemostats, and those little saws that you find on the swiss army knives will do the job.

It's not clear from the article, but I suspect what x635 said. I think she was actually driving an ambulette, and thus probably would not have had a partner.

Its pretty sad for someone to make up a story and say that they were rapped for a lil bit of attention
