NYS Museum in Albany, NY

7 posts in this topic

Today, I managed to make it up to Albany, NY with my wife, and stumbled into the NYS Museum. Quite a surprise to find a few fire apparatus from around the state. They also have a presentation on 9/11/01, which contains Engine 6, an FDNY EMS ambulance, as well as the usual piece of steel, and other artifacts from that horrible day. My wife made sure I was okay in going into this, I think I did alright, although near one of the displays I could swear I could smell the displays behind the glass containers. If you were down there in the months following the attacks, it is a smell you will never forget. Here is a link to their website: http://www.nysm.nysed.gov/ Anyway here are some of the photos we got...

I did not get too much info while looking at the displays, but here is a 1947 American LaFrance from Green, Islandpost-917-1237433547.jpg

and a 1926 American LaFrance water tower from the City of Albany.

Also on display was this FDNY EMS 1997 Ford/Horton ambulance that responded to the attacks. It carried one of the EMT-P s that perished that day, Carlos Lillo. The board there states this ambulance was used when his body was recovered, and ultimately remained inservice as shown until 2004.  Also claims it is still fully stocked, only the defib was removed.

Upstairs, and at the other end of the mall is the state memorials to deceased firefighters and EMS providers who passed in th eline of duty. Unfortunately, they are doing work near the EMS memorial, and it is fenced off.
