Dozens arrested in DUI patrol, more arrests expected tonight

In his 12 years as a police officer searching for suspected drunken drivers, Boynton Beach officer Pat Monteith has become an expert at spotting the most subtle signs of an impaired motorist.

The signs he spotted around 10:30 Friday night at the intersection of 10th Avenue North and Jog Road during a countywide DUI saturation patrol; a driver who identified himself to police as Greg Sutton of Toronto, Canada, sitting through a green light with an officer right behind him and another man in the passenger seat passed out with an open beer can in his hand, were not the most subtle signs he had ever seen.

Anyone who refused to take a breathe test to prevent evidence of their intoxication found that a team of 13 prosecutors were on hand applying for warrants to force them to take a blood test.

News of the blood testing received heavy media coverage, but State Attorney Mike McAuliffe called the controversy "much ado about nothing."

In another recent thread I brought up the fact that despite all the hype, NY courts don't take DWI seriously. This sounds a little bit more proactive.
