Empress is a great place to work, especially if you are a new EMT or new Medic. The experience you will get is very valuable and you will see and do things in Yonkers that you would never see or do in a rural/suburban EMS agency.

Over the years, I have thought about going back to work there again, but there is always something going on that keeps me too busy to go back.

I have a question for anyone who works for Empress, are they still using the same old UHF radio system from years ago or have they changed to a trunked or digital radio system??

Are the crews still issued the alpha-numeric pagers along with their equipment? I know that pagers are kind of outdated, but I figured I would ask anyway. Are the Nextel phones still used to contact dispatch as a backup to the radios?

Yes we are still using the UHF radio system.

No the crews are no longer using alpha-numeric pagers, with the tablet system linked with central dispatch, all the infomation is a click away.

And finally yes the nextels are used as the back up.

No - I got the just kidding part. I just didn't know who was sending the original comment to begin with, no worries. PM - In regards to the otherthing or get me cell from Drock. It would be quite interesting to post some pics together. As for the feasibility "on pavement" I think it can be done. It at least has possibilities.

All of the photos posted here are of Empress EMS personnel and were taken during a training and evaluation day. The day began with classroom instruction and testing, followed by practical evolutions. Practical exercises took place without HM PPE and then in non-encapsulated, and finally in level B encap.

Looks like some great training and awesome pics. I have not heard of EMS getting that involved in rescue. Is this a services that Empress provides to Yonkers only? Or anywhere Empress operates? What kinds of rescues would EMS get involved in? (i.e. what specifically were you training for?)

Whatever we have accomplished has taken a long time and is truly out of necessity, while always keeping an eye towards the future. If it was not for those that came before, what we have, and what we can do, would not be possible.

The overwhelming majority of what we are prepared to do focuses on the rapid decon and simultaneous treatment, when indicated, of those exposed to and contaminated by a hazmat. Primary mitagation of Rescue or HM senarios is not our focus, but being prepared to bring ALS to anyone wherever & whenever its needed is.

No more photos right now, but over this weekend I will be posting a training event to be held at Empress focusing on Chemical Suicides. We will look at origin, trends, specific chemicals, emergency response, safety considerations, and possible treatment options. The training will incorporate a practical element for Empress SOD personnel and will be open for anyone that would like to attend. The classroom portion should last about 2 1/2 hours. PS - If you, or anyone has previously attended a course on Chemical Suicide please let me know what you thought your training may have been lacking. Any constructive comments are welcome.

Just some photos of a recent training event. A chance to ensure that everyone is familiar with the varied equipment types and become more comfortable using it.

Just a few shots of the newly remounted F350 Turbo Diesel SOD Utility Vehicle. Equipment carried by this unit includes, 1 full set of ALS gear. Immobilization for up to 4 pts. Emergency decon items, PPE / CPC for 10+ providers (levelB), as well as EMS/USAR PPE, and a bit more.

Truth be told it will be used by all the field supervisors and rotated in and out of service based on the day of the week, 3 days on one day off, or something similar. Just seems to be the best way to keep some of the rolling stock in the field. We will still switch between this truck and the Expedition or Tahoe etc. But I would much rather have the resource there if needed. All but one of the compartments are dedicated to Haz-Mat support, decon, medical monitoring, and limited rehab type equipment. It should work out well. Let me know if you have any thoughts , or want to stop by etc.

But, is the "In Memory Of 301" lettering going to be applied?

I'm glad the truck is out there too. We have taken steps to make the other Supervisor units, Paramedic response units, and non-SSM Fly-Cars more versatile as well. We are adding or increasing the amount PPE, MCI management/response equipment, and more to all these units.

As for the "301". We had such bad luck with the last truck, and I say this with all due respect, the numbers and/or name do not belong on this one. We will however have too create something more suitable and permanent.
