21 posts in this topic

Just curious...

Which are your favorite rigs, by make, in the "WC?"

Seagrave

Mack

Pierce

Aerialscope

Spartan

American LaFrance

Ward Lafrance

Gowans Knight

Also, which is your favorite type of rig in WC?

Engine

Truck

Rescue

Tanker

Brush

Ambulance

Command

List your reasons why too - I hear so much indifference when it comes to the rigs serving Westchester.

Based my opinions on looks and "usability." If it isn't practical, I didn't mention it. There's others I like, just too many to list and too early in the AM to remember them all.

IMO, I think many of us are riding around in our favorite rigs. Sure we all like some of the others, but the ones that we all have should have been spec'd out to meet what the rig is trying to accomplish, as well as get the men there safely. I really dont think any department in westchester or around this area for that matter buys a rig due to price anymore. Sure some rigs function better than others, but did we ever stop to think about maybe just moving equipment to different compartments making it easier to access the everyday items? Nowadays, most rigs are hard to tell who is manufacturing them anyways, until you get up close and notice the name across the front back or sides. The only one that I can usually tell from afar is ALF, because of the slight angle on the front and the grill. KME and Seagrave look very similiar, as well as most of the others.

pierce is the best (quote]

Not as far as I'm concerned! We only had one Pierce, and we'll NEVER have another.

What do people put a greater priority on, form or function? Yeah, I know you want it to look good in a parade and all, but I'd much rather have a kick butt, reliable, not-so pretty rig, than one that "looks good".

I totally agree with you WAS967. Not to put down the so called "parade departments," but I feel that a good engine or ladder or what have you, should be based on performance, not looks. Would you want your brand new 2005 Engine that has been waxed and washed twice a day rolling up on scene and not having its pump work because nobody remembered to perform the maintenance checks on it? Or would you rather have an older rig that is semi-dirty and has been maintained every week, and you know that when you pull up on a working fire, you can damn well be sure that when you call for water, water will be there.

So my vote has to go to the engines that I can depend on, from every department. If you maintain, check and double-check that every bolt, every light, and valve work properly, and you are proud of it, in my book, that should define a favorite rig.

They aren't the WC, but here's some of my personal faves.

17-4-4.jpg

1994 Pierce Dash side mount Tanker Pumper, LCFD 17-4-4.

17-2-2.jpg

1986 Ford/Ward79 Source Pumper LCFD 17-2-2, first rig I really learned how to drive/pump.

E-308-2.jpg Photo Courtesy nyfd.com 1985 Mack CF FDNY E-308, I remember watching the guy paint the gold leaf on this rig, the summer of 85, and him yelling at me to stop tapping my foot. The 97 Seagrave that replaced this is also a beauty.

OK OK, Here's one from Westchester I really like, and that's saying a lot cause I have never been a fan of stainless steel ellipitcals.

Tanker.jpg

I'll also add Port Chesters TL-2 and the Mack CF refurbs running in Yonkers.

All photos taken by me, except where previously noted.

What's the problem with Pierce...the paint..big deal..My engine---has a pump, it has water and some hose...no frills...It has a pump, some water and, some hose....Isn't that an Engine Co. right there. I don't need a light tower or whatever you people think(not trying to be an @$$) but an engine Co. is an engine Co.....we might be old fashoned, but that's just how it is......We're here to get the job done...not to play games.

i can tell you what ladder I think is rediculous, ladder 20, size and overall layout, 98% useless in our village, serves almost no purpose, not to mention, barely ever rolls because there are hardley ever two drivers around in the day.
