Family, friends remember Columbia firefighter

(Columbia) Jan. 21, 2005 - Timmy Young risked his life helping others as a Columbia firefighter for 20 years until he suffered a heart attack while on a call.

Travis Young remembers his father, "His personality, his sense of humor, everybody could get a laugh from Tim."

Travis Young says his father Timmy died doing what he loved, "I could tell he loved his job. I once heard a story told about when he graduated from high school his plan in life was to go on to the army for a couple of years and become a firefighter."

Young was responding to an EMS call on January seventh when he had a heart attack and collapsed. He died on Thursday.

His wife, Eyvonna, says there's much she'll miss, "Him being silly, but it's not gonna be gone because of his son Travis acts just like him."

It's a compliment Young's only son happily accepts as he plans to keep the spirit of his father alive, by passing it on to his own son one day, "I'm gonna let him know about him having a goal in life and achieving it if nothing else."

And Young's memory will live on among the firefighting community as well. All the fire stations lowered their flags to remember a man who followed his dream and helped so many others along the way.
