Looking for info on old NYC firehouse

6 posts in this topic

Hey everyone-

A friend of mine has a business associate who just purchased an old firehouse in Manhattan on Lafayette St between Broome and Grand.

The only info I have is that it was commissioned in 1886, and designed by the firm of N. Le Brun & Sons (which I gather was the official architect firm of the New York City Fire Department in the later part of the 1800's)

Any further information, especially in regards to what company or companies used this house and when/why it was decommissioned would be greatly appreciated!

Here's a [poorly stitched together] photo from Google street view...

Ok my friend now thinks this was the original quarters of E55, now on Broome St (Little Italy, "Cinquanta Cinque")

185 Lafayette St was originally the home of Engine 55, opened in 1887. The company moved to their current quarters in 1899.

In 1905 the house briefly re-opened for Division 1, then in 1906 Division 2 moved in. In 1914 Division 2 moved to L20 and the house was permanently decommissioned.
