Tax Season is upon us.

6 posts in this topic

Tax time is here, and most of us will be busy getting our itemizations together. Times being what they are, everyone could use that little extra bit. I would like to hear about what types of deductions everyone plans on taking this year. Trying to concentrate more on the emergency services aspect both career and volly. There a bunch of unknowns out there and maybe we can all get some good ideas.

I claimed a small amout for uniforms (the City does not require we wear uniform pants, so they do not provide them, but I do), and my volunteer tax credit ($200).

I did not deduct mileage or any of that crazy stuff...

i will be keeping MUCH better track in 09...

We get a uniform allowance so I cannot claim the cost of uniforms. What I do instead is claim the cost for cleaning the uniforms. Its a small deduction (average around $400.00) but they do all add up.

Keep the ideas coming. I read a case where a body builder was able to write off the cost of baby oil! We just have to be creative :)

Most fires you go to you probably ruin a t-shirt or dress slacks.

If you eat lunch at the fire house before going to your second job.

You are REQUIRED to be clean shaven to wear an SCBA......razors are expensive.

Can't deduct a whole lot but what i do (or at least give my accountant):

- receipts for uniform dry cleaning

- receipts for uniform expenses (only larger items like pants, uniform shirts and boots if i need more than what i'm issued)

- I also submit my yearly membership costs for NAEMT and Advocates for EMS (not sure if all or a portion is taken off)

Thats about the extent of what is taken off as far as work is concerned. I have a buddy who writes off gas to and from places of work, but that is something way beyond anything i have time for.
