USCG sector NY just issued an advisement before to all marine vessels that they have established a temporary security area where the plane is and they also stated that they want all marine traffic to be on the look out for debris floating in the river from the GWB down.

They just issued another brodcast telling mariners to use caution as there is a jet engine under water in area of lincolin tunnel.

I was working when this occurred. The initial reports over NYPD Transit radios were for a "Level 3 mobilization for a small plane down around West 46 street and 12 Avenue, in the Hudson River." A few minutes later the dispatcher stated, "reports of 40 to 50 passengers". Only when we turned on 1010 WINS did we hear it was 151 passengers. Gotta love the initial dispatch info, but I guess it was mostly taken from the numerous 911 calls from drivers along the Henry Hudson Parkway that saw it.

Remember 9/11, initial dispatch was a "'small plane into the building" At 80 stories up, it may have appeared that way.. In this case it was small, smaller than a 747...

Glad to hear everyone got out with minimal injuries... This pilot should get some type of award for "coolness under pressure", not only to have a clear head to get away from populated space, but to put this plane down intact on an icy river. If it wasnt for the doors being open, and filling with water, they probably could have towed it back to Laguardia Airport.

Anyone know what New Jersey units are working as well?

North Hudson Regional Fire Rescue was the lead fire agency. I do not know if they had any other fire agencies there. NHRFR has a boat (x-NJSP) that I think I saw in some of the videos.

Weehawkin PD and PAPD were on the NJ side as well as police boats from NJSP, Union County PD, and Perth Amboy (Middlesex Cty) PD.

EMS from Weehawkin, Jersey City, Union City, McCabe EMS (Bayonne), North Bergen, and a couple of other Hudson County agencies. EMS mutual aid from Bergen, Union, and Middlesex Counties with Type 2 and 4 strike teams. NJ EMS Task Force sent two Mass Casualty Response Units, 1 Special Operations Unit (logistics, comms, rehab, MCI, shelters), and the Incident Advanced Team.

About 40 patients ended up on the NJ side with about half that number transported to hospitals in Hudson County.

I'm sure the numbers are not 100% correct but is gives a general picture.

Actually, NYC CIMS says Water/Ice Rescue is a NYPD Single Command incident, however, Aviation Incidents are Unified Command with FDNY/NYPD as primary agencies. And, it happened on the (water) border of NY and NJ, to add to the confusion.

Probably because of air/sea rescue being first due and the harbor units having divers available 24/7. Yes, the FD has divers but they're committed to other duties (Rescue Co, etc.). The PD simply has more readily available resources. (Not a knock on the FD at all)

For many years FDNY had their hands tied with fires. Half the city burned down over 20 years and in that time a lot changed. NYPD ESU picked up auto extrication because at times there were no truck companies nearby available to handle.

The FDNY Marine 1 and 9 fire boats were designed to put big water on big fires. They were not fast enough for rescue. In the summer smaller faster boats are put into service and both Marine 1 and 9 both have smaller rescue boats in the water year round. There is a new generation of fire boat on the way that will give FDNY a bigger presence on the water, but the primary means of water rescue are still shore based (FDNY) and airborne (NYPD).

Same thing happened with aviation. PD started the unit through the efforts of its members. By the time Fire got to looking for a bird PD made the case that they had everything covered.

As for who is in control, Commissioner Kelly is a smart and political savvy individual. He has Bloomberg's ear and has been able to expand NYPD's sphere of influence. FDNY is stuck with Scoppetta, a career politician who's previous experience was running The Administration for Children's Services.

Yeah I saw one jumping in from the helicopter on the footage that all the news channels were playing over and over.

I was down in Battery Park City on Friday Jan 16, 2009. I walked over to the area the aircraft is tied upto. It is roped off, and the usual media circus was all around. The plan is to lift the remains o f the aircraft onto a barge, most likely later today (1/17/09) I managed to get a few photos of FDNY, and NYPD standing by. Engine 96 and Engine 1 were also present.

Unbelievable.

Your plane crashes, you walk off with no injuries with your carry on luggage!

The odds of such a landing are so small. he had to slow the plane until it pretty much was on the verge of stalling, while making sure he kept the plane at a belly landing angle!

And as always, R-1 saving the day!

Actually, there was a problem with R1's inflatable boat. Although they were one of the first 84 on scene the boat had severed gas lines and they couldn't get it started so they hopped aboard one of the ferries.

You have thousands of gallons of Jet Fuel thats sitting in a submerged plane tied to seawall in the hudson. Not exactly an ideal storage situation. Then they're going to sling it and lift it onto a barge, again not quite an ideal situation. Something goes wrong they're going to need a lot of foam fast.

I know when I came up from the south of where the aircraft was tied up, I thought I smelled some jet fuel in the marina behind the World Financial Center. Also saw several seat cushions still floating there as well (almost 24 hours after the crash).

As per news report from US Airways:

Latest reports are that US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320, flew into a bird or flock of birds and lost both engines shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport over the Bronx while en-route to Charlotte, NC. The pilot was unable to return to the airfield and instead managed to successfully crash-land in the river. All passengers are reportedly accounted for. Majority of injuries are hypothermia-related.

At this time:

Manhattan was already in Fallback Step III prior to this operation.

FDNY Command Post moving to Battery Park Pier.

Incident remains Doubtful Will Hold.

West Side Highway is closed, FD and PD units are operating from 23 up to 50 sts. 1st avenue is also closed for emergency vehicle access.

The plane touched down at around W 50th St. FD units located it at around W 43 St, and southbound tide has gradually carried it. It has now been secured at Battery Park City pier. FD is now standing by with a foam response as agencies work to secure the plane and drain remaining fuel.

Circle Line Ferries scrambled ferries immediately nearby and picked up most of the passengers. All passengers are reportedly accounted for with mostly hypothermia-related injuries. Worst reported injury is a broken leg to a flight attendant.

Rescue 3 has relocated to Rescue 1.
