Ramapo cop shoots, kills knife-wielding man at New Hempstead house

NEW HEMPSTEAD - A 41-year-old man died this morning from a bullet wound to his chest fired by a Ramapo police officer defending himself from the knife-wielding suspect, police said today.

Thomas Jackson died at 6:15 a.m. after emergency surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital, police and town officials said. The shooting occurred just after 8 p.m. Christmas Eve when two officers were called to 96 Hempstead Road by Barbera Jean Mesi, who lived with Jackson.
