The US Auto Economy & Your Fleet

1 post in this topic

So I've been following this whole crisis with the auto industry. Extreme commentors are saying GM could shut down as soon as the end of this month.

Ford I wold think would be a little sturdier, given their hold on fleet sales. I think they are the most important, since they produce the majority of Police cars and Taxis in the US, as well as ambulance chasis. However, that is a minascule part of their business, and I'm wondering if they'd even continue with a fleet line. With municipal budgets going the way they are, I think fleet sales over the next few years will fall significantly.

If these automakers shut down, what would agencies do for IC vehicles and patrol cars? Could Toyota, Hoonda, and others come in to fill in the gap? NUC is already using the Toyota Camry and Toyota Highlander as taxis, but can foreign (although most of their cars are built here) vehicles really put themselves in the same class as the Chevrolet Suburban and Ford Crown Victoria, both vehicles which are now on the chopping block.
