Military Information In Profiles- Need Help

Recently, a member suggested to me that I had a "US Military" affiliation to the affiliation category of a Verified Member profile.

However, I want to do things right. Can someone name all branches of the Military that would be applicable to list in the Verified Member Profile?

I know there are a bazillion different ranks, so I don't know if it would make sense to add ranks, unless there's a very basic structure.

As far as I know there is only 5 branches of the military the Army,Navy,Coast Guard, Air Force ,and Marines.

Since there are so many, it may be easier to just have E-1,E-2.. O-1, O-2 etc... rather than the actual titles.

Nice touch! I would say that the branches would be enough. If someone wants rank they could always upload something as an avatar. Each branch has its own uniqueness when it comes to rank. I have one question...the coast guard actually has rank structure? I always thought they were all just puddle pirates? Hudson can also confirm this but I believe the air force went from stripes to donuts for their chevrons.

For the Marine Corps alone: (Navy in parathensis) you would need.

Just because we're not on the front lines (at least most of the Air Force) and we wingnnuts make sure we have the comforts of home when we deploy, don't hate us. Remember, that close air support has to come from somewhere....

The Navy does not have or use the WO1 paygrade. The reason? In the Navy, you have to hold the paygrade of E-7 (Chief Petty Officer) to apply for the Warrant Officer Program. In the Navy, a Chief is highly respected, as such, once a Chief always a Chief!

Also, an E-9 in the Navy is a Master Chief Petty Officer, period. The Command/Force/Fleet titles are positions, not grades or ranks.

Why not create two new types of affiliation: ARMED FORCES (as above Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard) and OTHER FEDERAL UNIFORMED SERVICES for all the rest?

As for rank how about ENLISTED and COMMISSIONED OFFICER?

Keeping it simple and allowing the member to further describe themselves overcomes the programming nightmare of having all those different ranks/titles/agencies/etc. to worry about.

Of course you could make it even simpler with a single title for all of them: UNDERPAID!!!! Gotta love our federal pay scales!

Can't argue with you that much on that point. It is true...whenever there's a fight, the Navy gives us a ride.

I'm shocked you didn't try to bring up the fact that the Marine Corps falls under the Department of the Navy. Oh that's right you remember that point to...we are the Department of the Navy....THE MEN'S DEPARTMENT!

Just remember one thing brother....the squid is the lowest form of marine life. Besides who the hell would name their personnel seamen....and "petty" officer. What? Is one pettier then another?

I often also get asked...how come the Marine Corps doesn't have a football team? I mean sure we have midshipmen on the Naval Academy team who declare for the Marine Corps..but we don't have just a Marine Corps team. You have the Army, the Air Force and the Naval Academy. To me the answer is pretty simple...what else could we possibly be the best at?

Last line of the Marines Hymn: "If the Army and the Navy ever looked on heaven's scene, they will find the streets are guarded, by United States Marines." Nough' said.

Keep It Simple Seth. Paygrade and Branch of Service.

Phytoplankton is the lowest marine life form. Without it the Foodchain breaks down. But I will give it to Marines to adapt and overcome. If everything in the oceans die, we'll eat everything on land. When thats all gone we can eat each other. Boy those Marines are smart!!! Thank God for MRE's and Seamen!!!

one last thing...In addition to Enlisted and Commissioned Officers there are midshipmen, cadets, etc. at the academies who do draw some pay. They're not commissioned yet, so whatever works... ("other" works fine)

The Merchant Marine has ties to the Coast Guard, Navy and other armed forces. But, while they might be veterans, crew members are not active members of the military. However, Merchant Marine officers are also commissioned officers in the Naval Reserve or another branch of the military reserve. During wartime or national emergencies, the military might call on the Merchant Marine to transport troops and military goods.
